I enjoyed my stay at Scotty's in July 2009 (3 days) after finding a deal online. It's central location is superb with the majority of the sights within walking distance. The train and bus station is roughly a 20 minute walk. The staff were extremely friendly, spoke English and provided help. They are not the reason why service was listed as only good, it is the payment policy: we paid daily and issued a receipt daily but we were perplexed as to why we received a final bill/receipt while checking out - which sums up the total payments we were assured. It was completely true, but it's very confusing when you get another piece of paper as we do not read Cyrillic or speak Bulgarian. So guests there is more paperwork and Scotty's, perhaps it can be simplified? There is free internet available and the rooms are tidy and clean.

My husband and I stayed here for one night on our way back from Bankso, due to an extremely early departure the following morning. The location of the hotel is good, however that is only one of the few positives I can mention.
The reception is on 1st floor ... no elevators. It took almost 10minutes to check us in for some bizarre reason and when we eventually went to our room the cleaner/ chambermaid started yelling at the guy on reception. Not sure why as I don't speak Bulgarian, but she definitely wasn't happy!
The room itself was adequate, however the bed was a futon which wasn't overly comfortable and there was a hole in the sheet. Tea and coffee making facilities was a nice touch. The bathroom was a "wetroom" which I found very bizarre.

The hotel's rooms were clean and comfortable. Free tea and coffee (instant) were provided, along with a kettle to make hot water. The deluxe rooms have a couch, chair, and coffee table to add some comfort. Make sure not to get a room on the first floor, as reception will be right outside your door. They were quiet at night, but after 8 or 9 AM it was impossible to sleep in due to their whistling, talking, phones ringing, etc.
Virtually every tourist attraction in downtown Sofia is within walking distance of the hotel. The same is true of good shopping and restaurant districts.
Any problems with the hotel you experience probably won't be fixed. They advertised wireless internet, and it didn't work for the three days of our stay despite that they claimed to be fixing it. Our air conditioner dripped (onto their couch) and nobody did anything at all.

Had a very pleasent four night stay in March 07. Would advise taking a taxi from the airport as the journey by public transport involves one bus and two tram rides. Taxi cost is approx 9 lev. Only use OK taxi's. You will be mobbed by pirate taxi drivers at the airport.
Although the hotel doesn't have a restaurant, breakfast/light meals can be had at the Market Hall, just opposite. Would recommend the HAPPY BAR GRILL on Vitosha road. Excellent food and service. One tip for tea drinkers, take English tea bags, otherwise you will be given green herbal tea. Milk is powdered so buy a small pack fresh. Transport is very cheap and would advise buying a one day pass for 3 lev. (Ł1) Avoid crowded trams on Vitosha, pick pockets do heathy business.
